#Mahr Federal Inc-REVERSE POLARITY: COUNTERING YOUR CLOCKWISE INDICATOR

Order at Light Tool Supply here http://www.lighttoolsupply.com/Mahr

REVERSE POLARITY: COUNTERING YOUR CLOCKWISE INDICATOR
George Schuetz, Mahr Federal Inc.

Last issue we looked at the advantages of balanced and continuous dial indicators.  There are also measurements that require dial indicators with a counterclockwise dial.  The counterclockwise dial can have the same characteristics as the balanced or continuous dial except that it is reversed.  A balanced counterclockwise dial would be indicated by having a plus (+) sign on the left, while a continuous counter-clockwise dial would count from zero, counterclockwise around the dial face.

With a counterclockwise dial, the hand travels the same as it would normally, but the scale is reversed.  In effect the dial indicator has had its polarity reversed.

The golden rule is that a clockwise dial indicator should be used when the indicator and/or the sensitive contact is on the opposite side of the part from the reference point, while the counterclockwise indicator is used when the indicator and the sensitive contact are on the same side as the reference point.

For example, when an indicator is used on a bench stand, the anvil is the reference point. The part rests on the anvil and the indicator and the sensitive contact touching the part are opposite the reference, as shown in Fig. 1.  This application would call for a clockwise dial indicator.

On the other hand, when using a bench thickness gage, as seen in Fig. 2, the reference, the sensitive contact, and the dial indicator are all on the same side of the part thus the need for a counterclockwise movement.  In this bench type of application, when a groove depth gets shorter, it pushes in on the indicator.  On a normal indicator this would generate a plus reading.  But with a counterclockwise/reversed dial, the indicator reads the correct polarity: i.e., a smaller reading.

Let's look at some other examples to demonstrate our golden rule:

First, take a look at the Bench ID/OD comparator in Fig 3.  When set up for an inside diameter measurement, we have a reference contact on one side of the part.  On the opposite side of the ID is the sensitive contact with the dial indicator on the same side, but on the outside of the part.  In this case, as part size increases, the sensitive contact moves away from the reference contact and towards the dial indicator.  This requires a plus reading and thus, a clockwise dial.

Now let’s imagine a horizontal bore gage (Fig 4) where the reference contact, the sensitive contact, and the dial indicator are all on the inside of the bore being measured.  In this case, as the sensitive contact moves away from the reference contact, the hole is getting bigger, but the indicator would normally display a smaller reading.  With a reversed dial this reading would be corrected.

Finally, one of the most common uses of the counterclockwise indicator is in a variable plug gage.  At first glance this may appear to contradict our golden rule mentioned above.  In this case, the body of the plug is the reference surface.  The contacts are on the same side as the reference surface, and so is the dial indicator but only through its transfer mechanism.  Therefore, as the rule states: when all three are on the same side, a reversed indicator should be used.

With mechanical dial indicators, it is a bit difficult to change the dial to/from normal (clockwise) to reverse (counterclockwise) readings.  However, with the digital indicators and electronic amplifiers available today this switching is done with the push of a button.

#JET Machinery

Jet

#JET® was born in 1958 when the founder of the company, Leslie P. Sussman, took the first Boeing Jet Airplane trip from Seattle, WA to Japan.

Jet began as a small dealer of air hoists and trolleys; sold out of a single hardware store in Seattle Washington. Over the years, Jet has carried everything from snowmobiles, transmitter radios, and forklifts to nylon stockings.

By the early '70s, Metalworking had become our core business line. Just 10 short years later, Jet launched into Woodworking. As Jet grew, we expanded our Material Handling and Air Tools into to a full line of products.

Jet pioneered the import business by working with overseas suppliers. We are proud to say we still do business with one of our original suppliers.

In the 90s Jet grew from being just an importer of high quality machines and tools, and began to design and manufacture its own products to stringent specifications. We have our own team of engineers both in the USA and overseas, and have a world class supply chain.

Over the years, the colors of the tools have gone from blue, to green, to orange, and finally the famously trademarked White that you see today on most of our products. Our product lines have grown, and the distribution centers have expanded; but one thing has remained the same. Jet still carries the same message of quality product, with the best features and benefits in it's product class; all the while providing excellent service.

JET and Wilton are committed to being the suppliers you can depend on for the epitome of quality, innovation and service. This isn’t just a statement to make us sound good—it’s a reality that has been ongoing since we introduced our products more than 50 years ago.

With JET and Wilton tools being used by manufacturing professionals in plants and machine shops across the United States, we knew we could bring the same quality and reliability to another very important customer - you.

Baileigh BB-4816M Magnetic Box and Pan Brake

Magnetic Sheet Metal Brake

The BB-4816M magnetic sheet metal brake is a unique box and pan brake that has endless bending possibilities when compared to conventional sheet metal brakes.  Requiring a common 220 volt, single phase power supply this folding machine can bend boxes or pans to almost any depth since it isn’t reliant on conventional finger depths.  A powerful magnet in the bending bed can be engaged by foot pedal or push button control to hold down a mild steel clamping bar of almost any configuration across the bed width or bed length.  The sheet metal is pinned between the magnetic mild steel clamping bar, at this point the bottom bending leaf can be lifted to complete the bend.
The mild steel clamping bar can be made of straight bars (of various widths if you had very tight boxes to make) for straight bends or segmented clamping bars for box and pan applications of any other configuration. Again, because of the unique design the operator is not limited to the depth of the item since you are no longer limited by finger length.
Our BB-4816M magnetic sheet metal brake can bend (items impossible for traditional box and pan brakes) totally enclosed boxes, triangles, alternate bends on varying planes, round items such as scrolling applications, and much more.  This bending machine is perfect for bending sheets of mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum, coated materials, heated plastics, and much more.
The bottom leaf’s bending extension can be removed for the tightest bend dimension between bends of 5/8”.  A scaled stroke angle control can be set for repeatable bends time after time.  This magnetic box and pan brake comeswith product supports and adjustable back gauges for production runs, as well as a simple to use gap adjustments on the standard clamping bars for different sheet metal thicknesses.
To initiate a bend on the BB-4816M magnetic brake simply put a piece of material between the clamping bar to the depth required, hit the foot pedal control that softly clamps the material (this is done for operator safety so fingers are safely out of the machine) allowing for any repositioning, once ready, lifting the leaf arms engages full magnetic power (6 tons) holding the material in place as the leaf arm makes the appropriate bend. One of the biggest advantages of this type of box and pan brake is that the magnetic power of 6 tons is consistent across the entire beam allowing for very crisp bends even in the middle of the machine.
The BB-4816M magnetic box and pan brake is truly a breakthrough from the limits of traditional metal brakes.  It is the perfect folding machine for HVAC shops, industrial art shops, and general sheet metal fabrication shops.

Meyer Gage Company Inc

Greetings!
Master Disc
I'd like to share some tips with you on how to care for your gages. Gages are a valuable tool for your business, and the investment made should be properly cared for to maximize your ROI.  With a proper care they can provide long service on the production floor.
Gage Handling

Proper handling of gages will extend their useful life.

  1. Most importantly be sure to protect the gages from heat and moisture.  After use, each gage should be wiped clean of fingerprints and contaminants, and then oiled with a rust inhibitor.  We recommend Tri Flow lubricant for gage maintenance.
  2. We mention wiping off fingerprints because some people have a high level of acids in there skin oils and this will form rust almost within 24 hours.  If this is the case you can actually see the latent fingerprint in the form of rust.
  3. Keep the humidity to a minimum.  50% if possible.

Once rusted the gage in most cases is ruined!

Proper Use

A few simple rules when using the gages.
  • Clean the parts before gaging to remove dirt, coolant, or metal chips.
  • Do not force the gage, use light pressure
  • Inspect for nicks or burrs before each use, this will eliminate innaccurate results.
When using plug gages for go no-go inspection the go member should fit into the work piece to indicate to the operator that the component meets the correct specifications.  The no-go member should not fit into the work piece.  If it does this indicates to the operator that the component has been machined incorrectly and is out of specification.
Plug And Pin Gages:  What They Can Do

 What Plug Gages Are:
  • Used to inspect holes and or slots for pass or fail conditions only
  • Used as masters for setting micrometers, verniers, or calipers.
  • Check locations, and distance between holes
What Plug Gages Are Not:
  •  Resizing tools, or reamers
  • Debur tools, or clean out tools
  • Used to measure the exact or actual size
Call us today for a distributor near you, we can help preserve your gage investment.  We offer replacement gage pins for sets along with gage handles for ease of use, and preservatives to prevent rust and corrosion. You'll also save time and money by regularly making a list of pins missing from your gage sets.  The cost and time spent searching for that lost pin is almost always guaranteed to cost you more especially if it delays production or delivery of your customers order.

Sincerely,

James Meyer
